History

Tahiti has a long and fascinating history that stretches back thousands of years. The first Polynesians arrived on the island around 800-1000 AD, with subsequent waves of migration from both the Marquesas Islands and the Society Islands. The Tahitian people established a distinct culture that blended traditional Polynesian beliefs with elements of French colonization which began in 1767.
In the early 1800s, Tahiti and its surrounding islands played an important role in the exploration of the South Pacific. The British navigator William Bligh was sent to Tahiti in 1788 to collect breadfruit plants which were then taken to Jamaica for cultivation. Later, in 1814, two French scientists were sent by their government to study and document the natural history of French Polynesia. This expedition resulted in fascinating accounts of Tahitian culture as well as discoveries that would help European explorers navigate through the Pacific Ocean.

During the 19th century, Tahiti became a popular destination for artists and writers looking for inspiration—most notably writer Robert Louis Stevenson who wrote his acclaimed novel “Treasure Island” while living on one of its islands from 1889-1890. In more recent years, Tahiti has become a hotspot for eco-tourism with tourists coming from all over the world looking to explore its stunning landscape and vibrant culture.

In 1880, Tahiti became part of France’s overseas territory and remained so until 1946 when it was granted limited autonomy within France’s new Overseas Territories Association. In 1957, French Polynesia was officially declared an overseas country within the French Republic and finally gained full independence in 1984. Today, Tahiti is a vibrant autonomous country steeped in both its ancient traditions as well as its modern history.
