The Riviera Maya
Also known as the Mayan Riviera, is a tourism district following the coastal Highway 307 which parallels the Caribbean coastline of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. This district historically started at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum although the towns of Puerto Morelos situated to the north and between Playa del Carmen and Cancun as well as the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto situated 40 kilometres to the south of Tulum are both currently being promoted as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor.

Origins of Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya, was created in 1999 with the encouragement of the local public authorities, under the leadership of mayor Miguel Ramon Martin Azueta. Since then, the Riviera Maya became, in one of the most important tourist destinations in Mexico and one of the mos pupular internationally.
The Riviera Maya is famous for it´s large scale all inclusive resorts and a historical tourism base of smaller boutique hotels as well as the many fine-dining restaurants available along the highway 307 and on or near the beaches.

Places in the Riviera Maya
Puerto Morelos
It is the northernmost town in the Riviera Maya called. It is located 16 km south of Cancun International Airport and 32 miles south of Cancun. The seaside town has a variety of hotels and restaurants with affordable prices an low density. To the north and south of the town is short more than five thousand rooms in grand resort type hotels.

Off the coast of Puerto Morelos is the Arrecife de Puerto Morelos National Park, protect area and whose shallow barrier reef is within walking distance fo the beaches. For the low surf, the place is ideal for windsurfing, snorkeling and diving.
The town has a fishing tradition and its port facilities are the largest in the state of Quintana Roo. It features a private marina, a botanical garden, a small crocodile zoo, westward a polo field and the area known as "cenotes route".

Playa del Carmen
It is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in the Riviera Maya, the city is in constant population growth and offers visitors hotels of different categories, shops, silver shops, international restaurants, entertainment, nightclubs, discos along the fifth Avenue that is pedestrian, and beaches. In addition it features hotel zone it´s called "Playacar", which is where the higher-class hotel, shopping areas, residential areas, golf aviary and from there yo can travel to the Cozumel island, tackling the famous ferris.

Akumal
It is a destination hotel and residential low density. Yalkú lagoon is located north of the town and is a option for the practice of snorkeling and beach nearby reefs. To the northwest there are several cenotes for diving or swimming. There is a small museum created by the CEA(Akumal Ecological Center in spanish) in the population.

South at 4km away is Aktun Chén, a cave with three galleries that feature stalactites and stalagmites and a cenote inside.

Tulum
Archaeological site of breathtaking beauty along the Caribbean sea, bathed in turquoise waters. It was an ancient trading port and walled Mayan city. The town has a good variety of hotels and restaurants. To the west are several cenotes and the ruins of coba are located approximately 40km away.

Women island
Is a municipality over the state of Quintana Roo, which is really a small elongated island. Places of interest to visit because they are the center and the ecological park known as "EL Garrafon"
